What is Sinicon Sand ?It is a unique volcanic glass, a large deposit of which is found at only one location on the earth which is South Africa. Sinicon Sand is made out of feed from this mines using patented manufacturing process to convert this volcanic glass into well-sealed tough glass granules which is ideally suited for use with cementitious and other binders.
Wall and Ceiling PlasteringProvide and apply 12mm thick single coat internal, external and ceiling plaster with Sinicon Sand and cement heat proofing mortar at a ratio of 3:1 ( Sinicon Sand : Cement) with adequate water content for all plain / curved surfaces of brick / block / RCC walls and finishing the same in correct line, level and plumb, making of edges, corners, still, grooves etc. as per drawings and relevant specifications including all necessary surfaces preparations as per Sinicon Sand heat proofing plaster methods; cleaning with wire brush to remove fungus / dusts, hacking of surfaces to receive plaster if surface is smooth, wetting and cement grouting of surfaces, curing after application for 14 days, cleaning etc. complete at all levels and all heights. Apply base coat and top coat painting as per specification.
Roof Plastering (Screeding)Provide and apply minimum 24mm thick single coat roof plaster (screed) with Sinicon Sand and cement mortar at a mix ratio of 3:1 ( Sinicon Sand : Cement) with adequate water content for all plain / slope surface of RCC roof and finishing the same in correct gradient to ensure water is not accumulated anywhere on the roof surface and the corners joints / junctions of roof and retain wall chambered to avoid water seepage as per Sinicon Sand heat proofing plastering methods, cleaning with wire brush to remove fungus / dusts, hacking of concrete surface to receive plaster, washing, wetting and cement grouting of surface, curing after application for 14 days, cleaning etc. complete at all the roof surfaces. Apply base coat of white cement as per specification.
Under the microscope, each tough granules comprises a froth of glass-walled closed cells each enclosing a near vacuum. Sinicon Sand is therefore best described as comprising millions of tiny sealed “thermos flasks”, making it an absolutely unique and unrivalled insulating and fireproofing material.
A Plaster mixing of Sinicon Sand : Cement at 3:1 ratio (by volume) is as follows.
This video demonstrates how to perform the Sinicon Sand mixing process.
This video shows Sinicon Sand’s fire resistance capability. The test material is a tile made out of Sinicon Sand and Cement.

What are the material characteristics of Sinicon Sand ?
-
1Exceptional Fire Resistance
Melting temperature is 1250 Deg.
Sinicon Sand concrete can maintain its structural integrity at high temperatures due to its thermal insulating property. Thus it ensures a very high thermal gradient on the outer surface during fire conditions resulting in very low temperatures immediately below the fire exposed surface.
-
1.1 AFire/Heat Resistance Test
Large panels of 3m x 1m x 75mm, masses 102kg, 142kg and 182kg consisting of Sinicon Sand aggregate with portland cement binder applied over “Spaceframe” reinforcing cage were tested for no combustibility (SABS 0177 : Part 5), for suitability as transformer fire shield and for fire resistance, using standard time temperature mode.
-
1.1 BFire/Heat Resistance Test – Temperature Measurements
Measurement After 2 Hours
Furnace temperature = 1050 Dec.CAverage temperature on cold face of panel after 2 hours fire exposure = 70 Deg.C.! 93% heat has been blocked.Note: 75mm thick panel with a density of 1000kg / CuM will have a fire resistance of at least 4 hours, as a non load bearing element.

1.2 AFire Exposure Test on Protected Steel Column
-
1.2 BFire Exposure Test on Protected Steel Column (After 2 Hours)
-
2Compatibility with Portland Cement
Sinicon Sand has a well sealed tough structure. This prevents severe granule damage during mixing and facilitates low water absorption, hence proper curing of the cement.
Note : The conventional Perlite based light concrete products are often friable and delicate with many fractured cells and looses whatever properties it has while mixing.
-
3Superior Strength
- Ultra lightweight concretes are generally weak and, in the case of aerated concrete, are extremely vulnerable to total slump shortly after casting, especially if any vibration or disturbance is present.
- Sinicon Sand concrete does not rely on air-entrainment and can be cured under any conditions of vibration. Once cured, the product exhibits surprising strength in comparison to other lightweight concretes.
- Strength varies with density but practical strengths up to 23MPa can be easily achieved.
-
4Excellent Thermal Insulator
Very low thermal conductivity factor.
LooseCement: Sinicon Sand 1:4.5Cement: Sinicon Sand1:3‘k’ Value (W/m Deg.C)0.050.130.15Note : ‘k’ value of conventional plaster : 0.72 W/m Deg.C
-
5Light Weight
Loose Density = ≈100 kg/m³
Density when Mixed with Cement : ( Cement: Sinicon Sand)Ratio 1 : 3770 kg/m³Ratio 1 : 4.5670 kg/m³Ratio 1 : 6480 kg/m³Ratio 1 : 10360 kg/m³Note : Sand + Cement (4:1) Mortar will have approx. 2000 kg/m³
-
6Low Water Permeability
Sinicon Sand when mixed with cement in the correct proportion, can be deemed to be completely watertight – without the use of any additives. Substrate corrosion is therefore substantially reduced.
-
7Good Adhesion (in Plaster)
Sinicon Sand when mixed with cement can be plastered (without the use of additives) to most common surfaces with good adhesion.
-
8Zero Smoke and Zero Fumes
Due to inorganic structure ” Sinicon Sand” evolves zero smoke and zero fumes under fire conditions.
-
9Zero Smoke and Zero Fumes
Due to inorganic nature it is vermin and termite resistant and it cannot be rot.
-
10Non-Toxic Dust
Dust is not healthy however, Sinicon Sand, due to its amorphous (non-crystalline) structure has however been demonstrated to be a very low health risk dust.
